White House announces 25% tariff for medium and heavy-duty trucks to start November 1

President Donald Trump announced Monday that his administration will apply a 25% tariff on medium- and heavy-duty trucks beginning next month.

“Starting November 1, 2025, all medium and heavy-duty trucks imported into the United States will face a 25% tariff,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

The U.S. trucking sector is central to the economy, hauling about 73% of all domestic freight, according to the American Trucking Associations. Roughly 2 million Americans work as heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers, with additional jobs in maintenance and support, based on U.S. Chamber of Commerce data. Because margins in logistics are generally thin, the industry is especially vulnerable to higher costs.

The leading import sources for these vehicles by customs value are Mexico, Canada, Japan, Germany, and Finland, according to figures from the U.S. International Trade Commission.

Those trade ties will feature prominently this week as President Trump meets with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Tuesday and Finnish President Alexander Stubb on Thursday. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said trade policy will likely be part of those discussions but did not offer further details.
