Zuckerberg Buys 19th-Century Irish Castle Estimated Up to $35M

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has added an Irish castle to his growing global property portfolio, quietly acquiring a 19th-century Gothic-style estate in County Waterford in an off-market deal.

The deal

Meta’s founder and CEO bought the three-storey Gothic-style Strancally Castle from the Alen-Buckley family in recent weeks. The price paid by Zuckerberg in the off-market deal is not known.

The transaction is not listed on the Irish state property price register. The Irish Times, which first reported the purchase, estimated the property might be worth between €20 million ($23.4 million) and €30 million ($35.1 million).

What he actually bought

Built in 1827 for an English politician, the property is a three-storey, cut-stone Gothic Revival house in County Waterford, about 150 kilometres (93 miles) southwest of Dublin. The property has been extensively renovated over the past 20 years by its previous owners.

The purchase includes 440 acres in County Waterford, marking the third large Irish estate bought by a tech billionaire since 2021.

Why Ireland

The location is not random. Ireland is home to Meta’s international headquarters, and the castle sits 125 miles from the company’s European base.

A spokesman said Zuckerberg and his family are excited to continue caring for the historic home and look forward to spending time in Ireland, where Meta maintains its international headquarters.

Context on the seller

Michael Alen-Buckley is a co-founder of London-based private investment firm RAB Capital. The off-market nature of the transaction is typical for ultra-high-net-worth trophy assets, which rarely hit public listings.

Options market and stocks to watch

The real estate splurge is a footnote for shareholders, but the names in orbit are worth tracking:

  • META: Watch for any commentary tying Zuckerberg’s Ireland presence to Meta’s European tax structure and regulatory posture, which has been a recurring investor question.
  • GOOGL: Also headquartered in Dublin for European operations, worth watching alongside META on any Irish tax or regulatory headlines.
  • AAPL: Another major Ireland-based operator; group-level moves in EU tech regulation tend to hit these names together.

For traders, the castle itself is noise. The signal is billionaire tech CEOs continuing to plant flags in Ireland, which remains the center of gravity for U.S. tech in Europe. Keep an eye on other news for related EU regulatory flow.
