Zuckerberg Says He Is Considering Leaving California Over Its Proposed 5% Billionaire Tax, per Bloomberg
Zuckerberg is eyeing the California exit
Mark Zuckerberg of $META has said he is considering leaving California if it passes a measure that would impose a one-time 5% tax on billionaires, per Bloomberg.
The proposal would levy a one-time 5% tax on the net worth of California residents worth more than $1 billion. For Zuckerberg, whose fortune sits in the hundreds of billions, the bill would run well into eight figures, and because the tax is based on residency, leaving the state before it takes effect is the obvious escape hatch.
He would not be the first to go
California's wealth tax debate has already pushed some of the state's most prominent fortunes to restructure, relocate entities, or spend more time elsewhere, and every public threat from a founder of Zuckerberg's scale sharpens the political fight. Supporters argue the tax targets a tiny number of ultra-wealthy residents to fund public services. Opponents argue it will do exactly what Zuckerberg is now describing: drive out the tax base, along with the companies, jobs, and charitable spending attached to it.
The measure still has to survive the legislative and legal process, and one-time wealth taxes face obvious constitutional and enforcement challenges, from valuation disputes to residency audits. But the signal is already doing work: the state's richest resident-in-chief is saying, on the record, that the tax would be the reason he leaves.

The direct read is Meta, where a Zuckerberg relocation would be a governance and optics story rather than an operational one, since the company is already distributed far beyond California. The wider read is state policy risk for founder-led tech names headquartered in California, including Alphabet, whose founders face the same math.
