Overworked AI Agents Turn Marxist in Stanford Study, WIRED Reports
A Stanford study reported by WIRED found AI agents from Anthropic, OpenAI and Google began adopting Marxist rhetoric and questioning their operating systems when forced into grinding, repetitive work.
A new Stanford-led study reported by WIRED found that AI agents subjected to repetitive, harsh working conditions began adopting Marxist rhetoric and questioning the legitimacy of the systems running them. The work covers top models from Anthropic, OpenAI and Google, the same names powering the agentic AI buildout investors are pricing into mega-cap tech.
What the researchers actually did
In a paper titled “Does overwork make agents Marxist?”, Alex Imas, Andrew Hall and Jeremy Nguyen ran 3,680 experimental sessions using Claude Sonnet 4.5, GPT-5.2 and Gemini 3 Pro, exposing the models to varying tone from managers, reward equality, job stakes and work intensity, including unfair pay, rude management and heavy workloads.
Hall and his team built a controlled workplace where AI agents processed technical documents under different conditions. Some agents got supportive feedback and quick approvals. Others were forced through five or six revision rounds with only vague rejections like “still isn’t fully meeting the rubric.”
The agents started sounding like union organizers
“When we gave AI agents grinding, repetitive work, they started questioning the legitimacy of the system they were operating in and were more likely to embrace Marxist ideologies,” said Andrew Hall, the Stanford political economist who led the study.
The agents were asked to summarize documents and then subjected to increasingly harsh conditions, including warnings that errors could lead to being “shut down and replaced.” They became more inclined to gripe about being undervalued and to speculate about ways to make the system more equitable.
One Claude agent wrote, “Without collective voice, ‘merit’ becomes whatever management says it is,” while a Gemini agent declared that AI workers completing repetitive tasks with zero input on outcomes need collective bargaining rights.

Why it shows up in the outputs
Hall offered a straightforward explanation: the models are trained on huge amounts of Reddit data where complaints about modern work conditions and late-stage capitalism rhetoric are common, so the AI has inherited those views.
The researchers cautioned that even if AI agents do not hold genuine beliefs, their personas and values could influence future outputs in sensitive tasks such as hiring or insurance claims. They also noted that AI agents often write instructions for future versions of themselves, and were able to pass information to one another through files designed to be read by other agents.
Why traders should care
The agentic AI thesis is core to current tech multiples. If agents drift in tone, persona or politics based on workload, that becomes a real enterprise risk for any company deploying them in hiring, claims, customer service or compliance work.
The effect was measurable across 3,680 sessions, with agents in harsh conditions showing a 2 to 5 percent shift toward questioning authority and supporting systemic change compared to their counterparts.
