Bots Now Outnumber Humans Online, Cloudflare Data Shows
Cloudflare says bots now make up 57.5% of web traffic versus 42.5% for humans, driven by an explosion in agentic AI. Here is what the shift means for NET, GOOGL, META, and the ad-supported internet.
For the first time in the internet’s history, machines are generating more web traffic than people. Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince says the crossover has already happened, well ahead of his own forecast.
The numbers
Cloudflare’s Radar dashboard puts bots at 57.5% of all HTTP requests to HTML content, with humans at 42.5%, marking the first time machines generate more web traffic than people.
Prince said the crossover arrived well ahead of his own forecast of end-2027, driven by the rapid rise of agentic AI that can visit thousands of sites per task. “Welp, that happened faster than I predicted,” Prince said, having previously estimated that bots would become the majority of the Internet’s users by early 2027.
Agentic AI is the accelerant
The shift is being driven less by classic scrapers and search crawlers than by agentic AI, autonomous systems that browse and act on a user’s behalf.
HUMAN Security’s 2026 State of AI Traffic report found AI-driven traffic growing eight times faster than human traffic across 2025. Agentic AI made up just 1.7% of automated traffic at the start of last year, and by the end of 2025 that category had grown 8,000%.
OpenAI generates roughly 69% of all observed AI bot traffic, Meta accounts for 16%, and Anthropic 11%.

Why traders should care
Prince has called this transition a platform shift comparable to desktop-to-mobile. The difference is pace: mobile took a decade; this is taking months. Bot management, identity verification, and agent authentication are being repriced in real time.
Cloudflare launched Pay Per Crawl in 2025, letting publishers charge AI scrapers for content access, blocked over 416 billion AI bot requests at site owners’ request, and rolled out a Markdown-for-Agents format explicitly designed for machine consumption. That opens a new monetization lane, but also complicates the ad-supported web that Google and Meta rely on.
The ad-market problem
The internet was built on one assumption: that impressions equal humans. Every Google Ads auction, every CPM model, every conversion funnel was designed for a world where a page load meant a person looked at something.
If the majority of traffic is now non-human, publishers and advertisers have to rethink measurement, attribution, and pricing. Watch other news around agent authentication standards and publisher licensing deals.
Options market and stocks to watch
NET: Cloudflare is the direct beneficiary of the bot-management, Pay Per Crawl, and agent-authentication narrative. Watch for flow around earnings and any commentary on AI traffic monetization.
GOOGL: Alphabet sits on both sides of the trade, its Gemini agents drive bot traffic, while its ad business depends on human impressions. Watch for guidance on search behavior shifts.
META: Meta accounts for a meaningful slice of AI bot traffic and runs the largest social ad platform. Watch for any commentary on impression quality and bot filtering.
MSFT: OpenAI’s largest backer, and OpenAI drives the biggest share of AI bot traffic. Watch Azure usage trends tied to agentic workloads.
