CDC: Cyclospora Outbreak Tied to Taco Bell Lettuce Hits 9 States

The CDC said Friday that the multistate cyclospora outbreak tied to shredded iceberg lettuce has expanded to nine states, with the parasite traced back to a Taylor Farms facility in central Mexico and lettuce served at Taco Bell locations. Food supply chain names and restaurant operators are back in the spotlight as recalls widen.

What the CDC actually said

CDC, FDA, and public health officials in several states are investigating a multistate outbreak of Cyclospora infections linked to iceberg lettuce in 9 states, and are telling consumers not to eat recalled iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms de Mexico.

Since the last update on July 18, additional confirmed cases have pushed the total case count associated with this multistate outbreak to 1,947, including the addition of 4 states: Illinois, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Pennsylvania. Those join Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and West Virginia.

Illnesses linked to this outbreak began on June 22 and onset dates have continued through July 20, 2026, with at least 98 hospitalizations and no deaths reported.

Taylor Farms and the Taco Bell link

Last week, the FDA said Taylor Farms supplied the shredded iceberg lettuce to the Taco Bell restaurants where people ate before becoming ill. On July 17, Taylor Farms recalled iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico, covering product sold at retail stores and served in restaurants.

Mexican health authorities said samples of lettuce and water from the facility tested negative for cyclospora, but that result does not disprove the FDA’s earlier identification of Taylor Farms de Mexico as the likely source of the outbreak.

Bigger than the confirmed numbers

There are nearly 12,000 confirmed or suspected cases of cyclosporiasis nationwide according to tallies from the CDC and state health departments, with Michigan hit hardest at nearly 8,000 infections. The CDC has sent three staffers to Ohio, which has 2,596 cases, to help with that state’s investigation.

Iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms is unlikely to be the only product making people sick, which keeps the risk of additional recalls open across the produce supply chain.
