Darline Graham sworn in as US Senator to finish late brother Lindsey's term

Darline Graham, the sister of the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, was sworn in on Tuesday afternoon to serve out the remainder of her brother’s South Carolina Senate term following his sudden death over the weekend. She becomes the first woman to represent South Carolina in the Senate.

How the appointment came together

South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster appointed her on Monday to complete her brother’s term, following his death at the age of 71. President Trump publicly recommended her in a social media post, and Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., blessed the choice and appeared alongside Graham as McMaster made the announcement.

She will remain in the Senate until January 2027. Darline Graham, who most recently served as commissioner of the South Carolina Commission for the Blind, has no background in elected office.

The swearing-in

Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa administered the oath on the Senate floor as senators from both sides of the aisle stood to applaud, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Trump special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner also in attendance. She was escorted to the dais by fellow South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott and Alabama Sen. Katie Britt.

Graham, 62, called it a privilege to finish her brother’s work and pledged to support the president over the next several months.

What it means for the Senate agenda

Lindsey Graham was chairman of the Senate Budget Committee and was set to become the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee in the next Congress. The Budget Committee is responsible for setting up the process for a third party-line reconciliation bill, and he also served on Judiciary, which is weighing Trump’s nomination for attorney general, Todd Blanche.

Darline Graham will receive her own committee assignments in the coming days. The reshuffle matters for the timing of any fiscal package that traders have been pricing into rates and equity risk.

Special election and the seat itself

A special primary election will take place August 11 to replace the late lawmaker on the ballot in November’s general election, which will determine who holds the seat for the upcoming six-year term. It is not clear if Darline Graham intends to seek a full term.
