Iran Denies Trump's Claim It Wants a Quick Deal With the US

Iran's Tasnim News denied Trump's claim that Tehran wants a quick deal with the US, keeping the door open to further escalation around the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran Denies Trump's Claim It Wants a Quick Deal With the US

President Trump said Iran wants to make a deal with the US, but Iranian state-linked media are pushing back hard on that framing. An Iranian state-linked outlet denied Trump's claim that Tehran wants a quick deal with the US, with Tasnim News reporting on September 14 that Iran has repeatedly said it does not want negotiations with the US government and that Trump's remarks were untrue.

What Trump said

Trump posted that the failing nation of Iran wants to make a deal quickly and badly, adding that he will determine whether the US will choose to engage, a concept he is open to.

He has also insisted Iran is begging to make a deal to end the war, amid what appear to be tenuous indirect talks between Washington and Tehran.

What Iran is saying

Iran said it currently does not seek negotiations with the United States, according to Tasnim News citing Iranian officials, with the contrasting positions coming as tensions remain high over the conflict and the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global energy supplies and commercial shipping.

The gap between the two narratives matters for markets. Traders were leaning into a de-escalation story, and a public denial from Tehran cuts against that.

Why the Strait of Hormuz still drives the tape

Trump revealed that the very big present from Iran he cited earlier in the week was 10 oil tankers being allowed safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. That kind of headline moves crude in both directions in the same session.

In another post, Trump said oil was flowing through the Hormuz Strait and called on countries that had not helped the US to reimburse the United States once what he described as the SCAM Conflagration was over.

The pressure campaign continues

The administration is ramping up pressure on Iran to agree to a diplomatic off-ramp, with White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt warning that President Trump does not bluff and is prepared to unleash hell, adding that Iran should not miscalculate again.

Separately, the US Treasury hit Russia's VTB Bank with new sanctions, accusing it of attempting to move frozen Iranian assets through the global financial system, with Treasury saying VTB opened offices in Iran, built ties with sanctioned Iranian institutions, and worked to move billions of dollars in Iranian assets.

Options market and stocks to watch

Energy and defense names tend to be the fastest movers on Iran headlines. Watch for reactions in:

  • USO — the US Oil Fund is the cleanest proxy for crude reactions to Hormuz and negotiation headlines.
  • XOM — Exxon tends to catch a bid when supply risk premium re-enters the tape.
  • CVX — Chevron is another integrated name traders watch on Middle East escalation risk.
  • LMT — Lockheed Martin often sees flow when defense posture headlines dominate.
  • RTX — RTX is another defense contractor to watch if the pressure campaign hardens.
