Iran Urges the US to Accept Its Proposal to Reopen the Strait of Hormuz
The seven-day offer is still on the table
Iran's offer to the United States to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days is still on the table, Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi told Iranian media outlets on Sunday, per Reuters. Tehran presented the proposal in mid-September after an interim ceasefire collapsed, and later acknowledged receiving a US response, though Iran's security chief said last week that negotiations had stalled because Washington failed to address all seven of Tehran's conditions for reopening the strait.
What Tehran wants, and where Washington pushes back
Iran's conditions include lifting the US blockade on its ports, lifting US sanctions on its oil exports, and ending hostilities on all regional fronts. If Washington accepts, the strait could reopen within six days, with talks resuming the following day, Araqchi said while in Baghdad for a meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.
The central disagreement is sequencing. Washington insists on addressing Iran's nuclear programme from the outset, and Vice President JD Vance said earlier this month that Iran must make a "meaningful" reduction in its uranium enrichment capacity to satisfy US demands and end the countries' eight-month war. Tehran argues talks should first focus on reopening the Strait of Hormuz, which before the war carried about a fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas trade, and on restoring security in the waterway.

Hormuz headlines are oil headlines. Any credible move toward reopening pressures crude and the energy complex in XLE and USO, while another breakdown pushes the other way, with tanker names and refiners wearing the volatility either direction. A fifth of global oil and LNG trade transited the strait before the war, so the timeline Araqchi laid out, reopening inside a week of acceptance, is one traders can actually price.
