Elon Musk Says He Will Give Every Child in the US a Share of SpaceX Next Year
One share for each of 73 million kids
Elon Musk says he'll give every child in the U.S. a share of SpaceX next year. There are about 73 million Americans under 18, which at SpaceX's current price of around $157 would make the gift worth roughly $11 billion. "Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America," Musk wrote on X. "This will be the first of many."

No mechanism yet, but Trump Accounts are the obvious route
Musk gave no details on who would qualify, how the shares would be distributed or when in 2027 the giveaway would happen. SpaceX shares closed at $146.03 on Friday, which would value the pledge at about $10.7 billion, and Musk owns 38% of the company, per Forbes. SpaceX set the record for the largest IPO in history in June, raising $85.7 billion.
The pledge came a day after Anthropic announced it would commit 5% of its shares to a new public benefit fund. Musk replied: "I recommend offering shares directly to the public." A path already exists: SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell announced in July that she and her husband would give one SpaceX share to more than two million children through Trump Accounts, the government-backed investment accounts for kids, and the Wall Street Journal reported the accounts are the most likely vehicle for Musk's gift. Treasury rules allow wealthy donors to contribute stock without paying capital gains tax, though families generally cannot sell donated stock for five years.

Options market and stocks to watch
SpaceX trades publicly as SPCX, and a giveaway of roughly 73 million shares is a real float and lockup question, not just a headline: watch for any filing or Trump Accounts guidance that pins down the size and timing. Musk's other listed exposure, TSLA, tends to trade on his announcements whether or not Tesla is involved.
