Poland Holds Emergency Meeting After Possible Assassination Attempts
Poland treats a threat against its top leaders as credible
Poland held an emergency meeting of security officials on Sunday after police received information about possible assassination attempts on Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz.
Interior Ministry spokeswoman Karolina Galecka said the report was transmitted to police via the State Protection Service, which is responsible for protecting senior officials, after the information was received by email.
Officials assessed the information as credible and concerning, with spokesman Jacek Dobrzynski saying there was a strong likelihood the threats could actually be carried out.
A suspect arrested and a schedule unchanged
Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski announced that police arrested a 60-year-old man in the Lower Silesia region in connection with the alleged plot, and Tusk thanked police for their swift response.
The emergency meeting, called by Kierwinski and intelligence coordinator Tomasz Siemoniak, brought together the Internal Security Agency, police, and the State Protection Service at the ABW Counter-Terrorism Center, and officials said further action was decided without giving details.
Government spokesman Adam Szlapka said Tusk's daily schedule would remain unchanged. Tusk was in Warsaw on Sunday for a meeting on measures after three recent school stabbings, part of a wider high alert that has included inspections of more than 64,000 facilities.
Dobrzynski told journalists that authorities take the matter deadly seriously, noting that threats against Poland and Poles have been rising month by month and year by year.
