Rubio: New Greenland Deal Lets US Build Unlimited Military Bases

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the newly signed US-Denmark-Greenland security pact is permanent and gives Washington the right to build as many military bases on the island as it deems necessary, framing the deal as a direct block on Chinese and Russian encroachment in the Arctic.

What Rubio actually said

Speaking on Fox News, Rubio called it a “fantastic deal” with “no expiration,” saying, “It allows us to build as many military bases as are necessary.”

He described the arrangement as basically a permanent deal that allows the US to put as many military bases as needed to defend everything. The agreement also sets up an investment screening process to keep non-NATO capital out of critical Greenland infrastructure.

The China and Russia angle

The agreement bans any non-NATO base in Greenland, limits adversaries from making investments there, and guarantees that China and Russia cannot have a base in Greenland, according to a State Department official.

Rubio said the aim was to avoid waking up one day and realizing, “OK, yeah, the Chinese military is not there, but their companies own all the ports, their companies own all the land.” Timing is notable: Chinese President Xi Jinping is due to arrive in Washington on Wednesday for a multi-day visit with President Donald Trump, and the Greenland deal could cast a shadow over the meeting.

Golden Dome and expanded footprint

A text of the deal released after the signing said the US can establish a “Golden Dome” defense system in Greenland as a shield against ballistic missile threats, with the island sitting on the shortest route from Europe to North America and hosting the northernmost US military base.

The US currently operates only the Pituffik Space Base in northwestern Greenland, which plays an important role in missile defense and radar surveillance. Danish television has reported that Washington could be planning two new military bases in Greenland.

How the deal got done

The agreement stops short of Trump’s demand that the US adopt Greenland as a US territory, but does permit a greater US military presence on the island — an option that emerged as Greenland leaders argued against a complete US takeover.

Representatives from all three countries went through various rounds of quiet negotiations that never leaked, starting in February, as Denmark and Greenland came to see the agreement as serving their own security interests.
