Russia Suffered 50,000 Casualties Last Month, NATO Official Says
Russia lost more than 50,000 troops in a single month
Russia suffered more than 50,000 casualties in Ukraine last month, with as many as 28,000 personnel killed, according to a senior NATO military official cited by Bloomberg.
Ukrainian forces suffered about 5,000 casualties in the same period, the official said, putting Russian losses at roughly ten times the Ukrainian figure for the month.
The official described September as the deadliest single month of 2026 for the Russian military, with troops sent into kill zones covered by armed drones, land mines, and artillery fire.
The numbers behind the toll
Ukraine's General Staff put the September figure lower, at 46,230 Russian personnel losses, but still called it an absolute record for 2026.
Its breakdown showed losses climbing through the year, from 31,710 in January to 39,290 in June, 42,860 in July, and 42,020 in August, before the September peak, an increase of 45.8 percent versus January.
Ukraine also recorded 2,090 Russian casualties on September 28 alone, the highest 24-hour figure since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022. Neither side's figures can be independently verified, and Moscow does not publish comprehensive casualty data.
The Bloomberg report added that Ukrainian deep strikes have destroyed oil refineries and data centers, that a ground offensive has recaptured more than 125 square kilometers of territory, and that Russian defense expenditure is expected to approach 17 trillion rubles this year.

Sustained losses at this scale raise questions about recruitment, mobilization, and defense spending, all of which feed directly into energy and defense pricing.
