Top 34 Americans Now Hold $2.6T, Equal to 12% of U.S. National Income

The richest 34 Americans now control roughly $2.6 trillion in wealth, equal to a record 12% of U.S. national income, per an FT chart from Saez and Zucman. Here is the trade angle.

Top 34 Americans Now Hold $2.6T, Equal to 12% of U.S. National Income

Wealth concentration in the U.S. just hit another record. According to a Financial Times chart built on data from economists Emmanuel Saez and Gabriel Zucman, the top 0.00001% of Americans, roughly 34 people, now control wealth equal to nearly 12% of total U.S. national income in a single year.

The takeaway for traders is simple: the asset-owner economy keeps compounding, and it is showing up in equity multiples, real estate, and private company valuations.

What the data actually says

A minuscule fraction of Americans now controls wealth equivalent to nearly 12% of the total U.S. national income generated in a single year, according to a recent media report. The wealth of the top 0.00001% of Americans has skyrocketed to unprecedented levels relative to national income, as illustrated in a Financial Times chart by economists Emmanuel Saez and Gabriel Zucman.

With the U.S. population at roughly 342.6 million, the top 0.00001% represents about 34 individuals. Zucman’s earlier work put the number closer to 19 households at $2.6 trillion, and in 2024, those ultrarich households saw the largest single-year wealth increase on record.

Why it is happening now

The Kobeissi Letter attributed the increase to record gains in the equity market and rising real estate prices, saying the appreciation in financial and property assets has disproportionately benefited the nation’s wealthiest households. “Asset owners are the only winners,” the post added.

Since the 1980s, the value of stocks, real estate and private enterprises has significantly outpaced wage growth. That is the structural story behind the chart, and it is the same story that has powered the mega-cap tech trade for the past decade.

The broader billionaire backdrop

Another year, another set of broken records for the 400 richest Americans. They’re worth a record $6.6 trillion in all, after getting $1.2 trillion richer over the past 12 months. It now takes a record $3.8 billion to make the ranking, $500 million more than the minimum in 2024.

Elon Musk is the first person to ever break the $400 billion mark on The Forbes 400. He’s the wealthiest person in America for the fourth straight year, worth a staggering $428 billion after adding $184 billion to his fortune thanks to a runup in Tesla stock (which has climbed 56%) and 12 more months of increasing valuations of his privately held rocket firm SpaceX and artificial intelligence outfit xAI. Ellison (now worth $276 billion) is $101 billion richer this year on the back of a 60% jump in the value of Oracle shares.

The political overhang

Sen. Bernie Sanders blamed President Donald Trump’s ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ for benefiting wealthy Americans while hurting lower-income households. Any policy shift toward wealth taxes, higher capital gains, or unrealized-gain treatment would hit the same names sitting at the top of the Forbes list.

For now, the political will is not there, but it is a tail risk to watch as the 2026 cycle heats up.

Options market and stocks to watch

Watch for names most directly tied to the concentrated-wealth trade:

  • TSLA: Musk’s stake is the single biggest driver behind the top-of-list wealth surge. Watch flow around any policy or executive-comp headlines.
  • ORCL: Ellison’s wealth swing this year is essentially a leveraged Oracle bet. AI capex commentary remains the key catalyst.
  • AMZN: Bezos remains a top-three holder. Watch cloud and AI margin trends.
  • META: Zuckerberg’s fortune sits inside the top cluster. Ad spend and AI capex are the levers.
  • WMT: The Walton family added three new centibillionaires to the list on Walmart’s 26% run. Watch consumer prints for follow-through.
