Treasury Preps $250 Bill Featuring Trump's Face, Pending Congress
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed the department has prepared a $250 bill design featuring Trump's face, awaiting Congress to change the law that bars living persons from US currency.
The Treasury Department is preparing to print a $250 bill featuring President Donald Trump’s face, with Secretary Scott Bessent saying the agency is ready to move once Congress changes the law. The Treasury Department is preparing to print $250 bills with President Donald Trump’s face on them and is just waiting for Congress’ green light, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Thursday.
What Bessent actually said
Bessent said that as secretary, he has “two mandates” for currency: “At present, no living person can be on U.S. currency, and the currency must say ‘In God We Trust.’” He added that pending legislation would carve out an exception for Trump on a $250 note.
“I don’t think that there’s anything untoward about having the president of the United States, the person who’s president of the United States, on the 250th anniversary bill,” Bessent told reporters.
The legislative path
Republican Rep. Joe Wilson, of South Carolina, has introduced a bill ordering the Treasury Department to print $250 Federal Reserve notes featuring a portrait of Trump. The bill has 15 Republican cosponsors, a small sum for legislation that was introduced more than a year ago.
The bill has not passed — stuck in the House Financial Services committee for more than a year — but in a statement to ABC News, the Treasury Department acknowledged the Bureau of Engraving and Printing is “conducting appropriate planning and due diligence” should the legislation be signed into law. It would still have to pass the Senate as well before it hits Trump’s desk, requiring a bipartisan majority of 60 votes for passage. Democrats are expected to try to block the effort.

How we got here
Earlier this year, the Treasury Department announced Trump’s signature would appear on all new printed money — a departure from having signatures from the treasury secretary and the treasurer. In October, the department said it was working on a $1 coin featuring the president’s image to mark the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence this July 4.
The Treasury Department insisted no taxpayer dollars will be used to produce the new bill, noting Bureau of Engraving and Printing finances its operations entirely through product sales and billings rather than relying on annual congressional appropriations.
Why traders should care
Currency redesigns are slow and rarely market-moving on their own, but the political theater around the Trump brand on official government materials feeds the broader meme-and-merch trade. New currency designs can take years to develop, according to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. Designs typically are only released to the public six to eight months before the currency enters circulation to hamper counterfeiters, the bureau says.
Translation: any actual $250 bill is far off, even if the law changes. The near-term action is in sentiment plays on Trump-aligned tickers and crypto.
Options market and stocks to watch
Watch for sentiment-driven flow on names tied to the Trump brand and the broader political narrative:
- DJT — Trump Media remains the most direct equity proxy for Trump brand headlines. Watch for retail-driven volume spikes on any legislative movement.
- CRCL — Circle and the stablecoin complex tend to catch a bid when US currency policy enters the headlines.
- COST — Higher-denomination bills are a recurring talking point for cash-heavy retailers; watch for any commentary if circulation talk advances.
- COIN — Crypto exchanges historically benefit when faith-in-fiat narratives gain traction in political news cycles.
