Feds Arrest 11 in California Voter Fraud Operation, 28 Foreign Nationals Charged, per Democracy Docket

Operation Protect the Vote

The Trump administration carried out raids in California over alleged voter fraud, per Democracy Docket, with 11 people arrested on Monday and 28 foreign nationals charged in total, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Central District of California. The arrests are part of "Operation Protect the Vote," a coordinated effort among all four California-based U.S. Attorney's Offices, and law enforcement are still seeking the remaining defendants or have summoned them to appear.

The Trump administration carried out raids in California over alleged voter fraud, per Democracy Docket, with 11 people arrested on Monday and 28 foreign nationals charged in total, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Central District of California.

All 28 people charged are lawful permanent residents, green card holders who have legal immigration status but are not U.S. citizens and are not permitted to vote in U.S. elections. Prosecutors say 21 of the 28 actually cast ballots. The charges include making false statements in a naturalization application, and some defendants are also charged with fraudulent voter registration. Both are felonies carrying a statutory maximum of five years in federal prison.

A fight with California over 20,000 names

The raids follow an open dispute between the Justice Department and the state. On October 13, the federal government gave California a list of the charged individuals so their vote-by-mail ballots could be set aside while their citizenship status was confirmed. California declined to help, and the United States sued, asking a court to prevent what it calls the unlawful dilution of citizens' votes. Acting Deputy Attorney General Trent McCotter said each of the 28 defendants appears on a list of more than 20,000 likely noncitizen registrants the department provided to California election officials last week.

"Every illegal vote cancels out the vote of a lawful American citizen," McCotter said. First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli said the Justice Department has charged 113 noncitizens across 20 states with illegal voting and registration offenses in the last seven weeks, and 156 people with voter fraud related offenses since the start of the Trump administration. California officials have disputed the federal government's claims and the scale of the problem, and the arrests land two weeks before the November 3 midterm elections.

Election enforcement has no direct ticker, but it feeds the pre-midterm headline tape that index positioning is built on. The litigation track is the part with a timeline: the federal lawsuit over California's ballots, and any court order on setting aside the votes of the 20,000-plus registrants on the federal list, will land before November 3 and could move prediction-driven positioning around control of Congress. For traders, that argues for watching headline sensitivity in SPY rather than chasing any single name on this story.
