President Trump is calling for New Mexico to be renamed "New America," effective immediately. "New Mexico should immediately change its name to New America. We are not Mexico, we are the United States of America!" Trump wrote on Truth Social on Monday, shortly before departing the White House for a midterm campaign rally in Kansas.

Trump claimed, without citing evidence, that home values and incomes in the state would rise because of a name change, and he repeated his claims about election integrity in the state, writing: "Maybe even the Crooked Elections, that New Mexico is known for, would become honest again!" New Mexico is a Democratic-leaning state that Trump lost by 6 points in the 2024 election. It is not the first time he has floated the idea: in September, he posted a map of the state with the word "Mexico" crossed out and "America" written underneath, an image the White House X account reposted, and the state's governor dismissed the idea at the time.
The renaming run has a legal ceiling
The post extends a renaming campaign that has run through Trump's second term. He renamed the Gulf of Mexico the "Gulf of America" by executive action, signed an executive order in August renaming Lake Ontario "Lake America" during his trade fight with Canada, has repeatedly floated calling the Strait of Hormuz the "Trump Strait," and at a rally in Clarksville, Tennessee on Saturday suggested renaming the Atlantic or Pacific the "Trump Ocean."
A state is different. The president can change what federal geographic features are called in the government's naming system, but he has no constitutional power to rename a state on his own. Renaming New Mexico would have to happen through the state itself, and there is no indication New Mexico's government has any interest in taking it up.

There is no tradable catalyst in a state renaming post, and no ticker trades on it.
