Trump Says Canada Will Be the 51st State, Greenland the 52nd
Trump again said Canada will become the 51st state and Greenland the 52nd, keeping annexation talk, tariffs and Arctic resources in focus for markets.
The annexation talk is back
President Trump is again saying Canada will become the 51st state, adding that Greenland would follow as the 52nd.
The comments are the latest round of a theme he has pushed throughout his second term. In September he posted a map showing both Canada and Greenland inside US borders, and said the image reflected what the US needs for national security and economic prosperity.
Trump has framed Greenland as an Arctic security asset, pointing to its position between North America and Russia and its critical minerals. For Canada, he has argued the relationship only truly works if Canada joins the union.
Pushback from Ottawa and Copenhagen
Canada has rejected the idea outright. Canadian officials have said sovereignty is not negotiable, and the rhetoric has sparked a wave of pushback at home, including "Canada Is Not for Sale" merchandise becoming a fixture at public events.
Denmark has been just as blunt. Its foreign minister has called the Greenland talk absurd and said the island is not for sale.
The European Union has said any suggestion of forced territorial change is unacceptable under international law. Denmark has also moved to strengthen its military presence in Greenland, a signal that Copenhagen is treating the rhetoric seriously even if no formal US move is on the table.
Why markets still pay attention
Trump has said he does not expect military action and prefers economic pressure, with tariffs as the main lever. That keeps the story live for traders even if statehood itself is remote.
The US and Canada run one of the most integrated trade relationships on earth, and components in industries like autos cross the border repeatedly before a finished product is sold. Every escalation in rhetoric raises the odds of new tariff rounds.

Options market and stocks to watch
Canadian exposure is the first place to look. TD and RY trade in New York and tend to react when US-Canada tensions flare, since trade friction hits Canadian growth expectations directly.
The Greenland angle runs through critical minerals. MP is the market's main rare earth proxy, and Arctic resource headlines tend to pull speculative call flow into the name.
For the broad market, tariff escalation risk lives in SPY puts and in rate expectations. Watch unusual flow in Canadian banks and miners whenever the annexation rhetoric heats up, and track the wider tape on the Unusual Whales news feed.
