Trump Claims Energy Ceasefire, Zelensky Says News to Me

Trump announces a ceasefire Kyiv says it never heard about

President Donald Trump claimed on Sunday that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to an energy ceasefire, effective immediately, but Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the announcement was news to him.

Trump wrote on Truth Social that both parties have agreed and warned them not to break it, offering no details on scope, duration, or how compliance would be monitored.

Moscow had not immediately commented on the claim, and neither government confirmed a deal in the hours after the post.

Zelensky says Ukraine is ready, if Russia is

Speaking to Axios, Zelensky said that if Russians agree to an energy ceasefire, Ukraine will agree, and asked Washington to clarify what was negotiated with Russian President Vladimir Putin and when the ceasefire begins.

Earlier on Sunday, Zelensky had reiterated that Ukraine was prepared to stop striking Russian oil refineries if Moscow halted attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure, a conditional offer he has repeated since September.

Reports after the announcement said Russia struck a power station in Kharkiv and other energy facilities, and Ukraine's largest private energy company, DTEK, announced fresh power outages in Kyiv on Sunday. Trump made a similar energy ceasefire announcement last month that neither side confirmed and that quickly collapsed.

The announcement also followed a US move to suspend sanctions to allow up to 4.8 million tonnes of Russian diesel onto world markets under a Treasury license covering cargoes until April 7, 2027, a deal Zelensky criticized as a weak decision.

How this could hit the options market

Energy ceasefire headlines move oil first and ask questions later, which makes this a classic headline risk setup for crude, refiners, and European energy names.

Watch XOM, CVX, VLO, and USO for flow, alongside defense names like LMT if strikes continue despite the claim.

If attacks on refineries and grids actually pause, diesel cracks and winter power pricing change fast. If they do not, the reversal trade will show up in options flow within a session.
