Trump revives Greenland push, threatens US troop pullout from Europe
Trump reopened his Greenland fight at the NATO summit in Ankara, saying the island should be US-controlled and floating a full US troop pullout from Europe. Defense, rare earths, and European risk assets are back on watch.
President Donald Trump reopened his Greenland fight at the NATO summit in Ankara, telling reporters the island should be controlled by the United States and floating a full US troop withdrawal from Europe if allies keep pushing back. Trump resurrected his push for the U.S. to acquire Greenland, and suggested the U.S. could pull all of its armed services members out of Europe in response to the Continent’s continued pushback on the issue.
What Trump said
The island territory should be controlled by the United States, Trump said shortly after he arrived in Ankara, Turkey, for a NATO summit. The 32-member alliance, which includes Denmark, of which Greenland is a part, fell into a crisis in January, as Trump demanded that the U.S. must take control of the island territory on national security grounds.
In a bilateral meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Trump vented that Europe’s refusal to go along with his expansionist desire is what hurt his relationship with NATO. Greenland doesn’t help Denmark, he said. Denmark doesn’t spend money to really help Greenland, but it’s an important part for the United States.
The troop threat
The threat carries direct stakes for the roughly 80,000 US troops stationed across the continent and the tens of thousands of American military families living near bases in Germany, Italy, Poland, and elsewhere.
Tensions remain high, as the U.S. is drawing down its deployment of troops in Europe. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recently announced a review of U.S. troops in Europe, as he scolded NATO allies over their shameful response to the Iran war.

Denmark and Europe push back
Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen pledged to defend every inch of NATO, including its own territory. Rachel Reeves, the U.K. chancellor, told reporters the future of Greenland is up to the people of Greenland and of Denmark, and not up to the U.S. President.
Trump, who had refused to rule out the use of military force to annex Greenland, abruptly announced in late January that he and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte had formed a framework of a future deal with respect to the territory. A working group of representatives from the U.S., Denmark and Greenland have since been meeting to discuss the way forward.
Why traders should care
A credible drawdown of US forces in Europe would ripple into defense budgets, energy security, and Arctic logistics. Rutte said Trump absolutely has a point on preventing China and Russia from gaining access to the Arctic, referring to the president’s claim that Greenland is surrounded by Chinese and Russian ships.
Greenland’s critical minerals angle also stays in play, with rare earths, uranium, and Arctic shipping routes all in the geopolitical mix. Any concrete deal, or breakdown, out of the trilateral working group is the catalyst to watch.
