Trump Says US Reached Deal for ‘Permanent Control’ Over Greenland Security
Trump says the US has reached a deal with Denmark and Greenland granting Washington permanent control over security, with plans for a large military presence on the island.
President Donald Trump said the US has entered into an agreement with Denmark and Greenland that hands Washington permanent control over security, and all other needs, in Greenland. The announcement caps months of pressure from the White House on Copenhagen and marks a shift from Trump‘s earlier threats to acquire the island outright.
What Trump announced
Trump revealed the deal on Truth Social shortly after an Oval Office press gathering, framing it as a resolution to a century-old strategic question. He called it an ‘Infinite Life’ Agreement with no end.
According to Bloomberg, Trump said the arrangement addressed ‘ALL of our many US concerns’ and would be at ‘NO COST to the United States.’
Military buildup in the Arctic
Trump also said Washington will immediately begin the process of developing a large military presence in the appropriate part of Greenland, and work with Greenlanders on development and construction.
Prior reporting indicated Trump had floated adding US troops and more military bases in Greenland, particularly with respect to supporting the Golden Dome missile defense system. That points to defense contractors and Arctic-focused suppliers as the most direct beneficiaries.

How we got here
The deal follows a bruising diplomatic stretch in which Trump‘s pressure campaign rattled longtime US partners, and his threat to impose tariffs on countries standing in his way on Greenland escalated the clash into a transatlantic crisis.
Trump backed off the tariff threat after meeting NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, and the two sides had previously agreed only to a framework of a future deal on Greenland. Friday‘s announcement appears to formalize that framework, though full terms have not been published.
Why traders care
Greenland sits on vast untapped reserves of critical minerals, and a permanent US security footprint changes the calculus for rare earth, uranium and Arctic shipping exposure. It also opens the door to new defense contracts tied to base construction, missile defense and Arctic logistics.
Watch for follow-through in defense primes and critical minerals names as the market digests scope and spending.
Options market and stocks to watch
LMT: Lockheed Martin is a core Golden Dome and missile defense contractor. Watch for flow tied to any expanded Arctic footprint.
RTX: RTX‘s radar and missile defense portfolio would be in the mix for any Greenland-based sensor or interceptor buildout.
NOC: Northrop Grumman is another prime with heavy exposure to missile defense and Arctic surveillance programs.
MP: MP Materials is the most liquid US-listed rare earth play. Watch for a bid on any policy language around Greenland‘s critical mineral reserves.
UEC: Uranium Energy could see interest as investors game out Arctic resource access alongside broader nuclear tailwinds.
