US Embassies in Middle East Warn Americans of Flight Risks as Iran Tensions Rise

US embassies across the Middle East have told Americans in the region to stay vigilant and be ready for flight cancellations as tensions with Iran escalate. Embassies in some 10 Middle East countries on Saturday warned American citizens to exercise caution and “consider departing or be prepared to depart should there be escalation,” citing a complex security environment with the potential for unforeseen escalation.

What the advisories actually say

The embassies advised US citizens in the Middle East to exercise caution and heightened vigilance and to be prepared for flight cancellations, periodic airspace closures, and potential travel disruptions. Some airlines in the region have already postponed resumption of earlier flight schedules, and others have cancelled some routes.

Alerts were posted by embassies in countries including Israel, Jordan, Iraq, Egypt, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

Why the sudden urgency

A senior Gulf government official and a foreign diplomat based in the region said the Gulf is on “high alert” in anticipation of an increase in military action in the coming days, with media reports saying President Donald Trump plans to launch a fresh attack on Iran this weekend.

An Iranian official warned that a US strike would lead to Iran tightening its control over critical maritime passages. That is the piece traders should focus on: the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb are back on the table as pressure points.

Oil is already reacting

On Friday, West Texas Intermediate futures rose more than 1% to close at $84.67 per barrel, while Brent crude, the international benchmark, also gained more than 1% to settle at $90.12. Prices had fallen more than 5% for the week after selling off Monday on hopes the conflict in the Middle East would de-escalate.

Recent strikes by Iran-backed Houthi fighters in Yemen and Friday’s drone strike in Egypt have raised fears that the crucial Bab el-Mandeb strait at the southern end of the Red Sea could become a second choke point for Iran to target as the two sides tussle over the Strait of Hormuz.

Options market and stocks to watch

Traders should watch names most exposed to Middle East supply chains, oil prices, and regional air traffic. Keep an eye on flow in:

XOM and CVX: watch for a bid if crude keeps grinding higher on Hormuz risk.

USO: the retail proxy for WTI, watch for volume spikes on any headline strike confirmation.

DAL and UAL: watch for pressure if regional airspace closures widen and jet fuel costs push higher.

LMT: watch defense flow if a fresh US strike materializes over the weekend.
