US Warns Americans in 9 Mideast Countries as Saudi-Houthi Fight May ‘Escalate Rapidly’

The US State Department has told Americans across nine Middle East countries to exercise heightened caution, warning that renewed Houthi-Saudi fighting could escalate quickly and disrupt regional travel and energy flows.

What the State Department said

US diplomatic missions in Iraq, Bahrain, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Qatar, Lebanon, Kuwait and Jordan urged citizens to exercise “heightened vigilance,” warning that the regional security environment remains complex and could deteriorate unexpectedly.

The notice said Iranian-supported Houthis have engaged in hostilities against Saudi Arabia, including civilian airports, and that the military conflict has the potential to escalate rapidly, urging Americans to refrain from traveling to the Middle East.

The State Department also flagged that Iran and groups supportive of Iran may target other US interests overseas, including US businesses and institutions.

Why the alert now

Saudi Arabia issued emergency alerts warning of a “hostile aerial threat” across the kingdom, including Riyadh, late Friday and early Saturday, and at least one explosion was reported in the Saudi capital, though authorities reported no casualties or damage.

The US warning followed Saudi Arabia reporting that its air defence systems intercepted a ballistic missile launched by Yemen’s Houthi fighters towards Riyadh.

Iran ups the pressure

Iran set seven conditions to Washington for starting negotiations to end the ongoing war and warned it was prepared for a “decisive war” if its demands were rejected, with security chief Mohsen Rezaei telling Al Jazeera that Qatar has conveyed Tehran’s conditions to Washington and that Iran is awaiting President Trump’s response, listing an end to the war on all fronts, the release of frozen funds, and an end to the naval blockade.

Trump returned to the White House on Saturday evening after an overnight stay at Camp David.

Shipping and energy angle

An “unknown projectile” struck a tanker off the coast of Oman, a British maritime agency said, as the US and Iran vie for control of the Strait of Hormuz, where Iran has effectively maintained control over navigation since the outbreak of the war, requiring vessels to obtain permission and pay transit fees.

Maritime trade tracking firm Kpler said traffic through the Hormuz strait has dropped sharply, and that operators are closely monitoring routing behaviour and diplomatic developments that could reshape risk across regional shipping lanes.
