2 US service members killed, 1 missing in Iran attack on Jordan base

Two American service members were killed and one is missing after an Iranian ballistic missile and drone attack on US and partner forces in Jordan, US Central Command said Saturday. The escalation adds fresh geopolitical risk to markets already pricing in a widening US-Iran conflict.

What CENTCOM said

Two U.S. service members were killed Friday while defending against an Iranian ballistic missile and drone attack in Jordan, and another service member is missing, U.S. Central Command said Saturday.

A third US service member is missing, while four more troops had to be medically evacuated to hospitals in Jordan and have since been discharged. CENTCOM is withholding the identities of the dead until 24 hours after the service members’ next of kin have been notified.

A widening conflict

Since the war began, 16 US service members have been killed and over 430 wounded. The Jordan strike marks one of the more direct blows to US forces since hostilities intensified.

The United States and Iran have been exchanging strikes aimed at infrastructure and military targets, and their battle over the Strait of Hormuz has intensified in a conflict increasingly focused on control of the essential waterway that previously carried a fifth of the world’s crude oil.

Regional fallout

Kuwait also reported attacks on an oil facility, with the country’s foreign ministry accusing Iran of targeting civilian sites and key infrastructure. Kuwait briefly closed its airspace due to missile threats, and Kuwait Airways said it was rescheduling most flights to and from the capital.

More than 50,000 US military personnel are currently deployed across the Middle East, CENTCOM added.

Iran signals escalation

The US has violated its commitments under the deal signed about a month ago and Iran is “no longer implementing them,” Iran’s deputy foreign minister Kazem Gharibabadi told state TV. Iran’s supreme leader had warned of “unforgettable lessons” if the United States keeps attacking the Islamic Republic.
