Xi Doubles Down: China Invites 100,000 Young Americans to Study Abroad
Xi Jinping announced China will invite 100,000 young Americans for exchanges and study over five years, doubling a 2023 pledge and signaling a softer tone during his White House state visit with Trump.
Chinese President Xi Jinping used his White House state visit to unveil a new soft-power push: an invitation for 100,000 young Americans to visit China for exchanges and study over the next five years. The announcement doubles the size of a similar 2023 program and lands at a moment when U.S.-China relations remain strained on trade, tech, and Taiwan.
What Xi actually announced
Xi said, “The hope of China-US relationship lies in our people, and its future lies with the young. I am glad to announce an invitation for 100,000 young Americans to visit China for exchanges and study in the coming five years.”
The announcement builds on a 2023 pledge to bring 50,000 young Americans to China over five years, a target that was reached this year ahead of schedule. The new number is effectively double the pace.
The diplomatic backdrop
The gifts came as Xi and Trump undertook the second day of an elaborate state visit to Washington, with Trump and the first lady greeting Xi and his wife on the tarmac of Joint Base Andrews and hosting an arrival ceremony on the South Lawn. Xi is now the first Chinese leader to make two formal state visits to the United States.
Xi also announced he was gifting the U.S. with two giant pandas, calling the panda “an envoy of friendship between the Chinese and the Americans.” The optics are clearly aimed at a reset with Washington.

Why it matters for markets
Student and youth exchange programs are typically a leading indicator of thawing bilateral relations. Broader people-to-people flows often precede loosening on tourism, business travel, and even trade negotiations.
Xi framed the moment by saying, “Achieving the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and making America great again can go hand-in-hand,” a direct nod to Trump’s campaign slogan. Traders should read that language as a signal Beijing wants a deal, or at least the appearance of one.
Options market and stocks to watch
A softer U.S.-China tone tends to ripple through several corners of the tape. Names worth watching:
- BABA — Alibaba and other China ADRs typically catch a bid on diplomatic thaw headlines.
- PDD — PDD Holdings is sensitive to any easing of U.S.-China friction and cross-border commerce risk.
- TCOM — Trip.com stands to benefit if youth and tourism travel corridors reopen.
- EDU — New Oriental Education is directly leveraged to student exchange flows.
- FXI — Watch the broad China large-cap ETF for a read on how the market is pricing the state visit overall.
