Zelensky Says He Was Betrayed as Starlink Service Is Restricted in Ukraine; Musk Points to Washington
Ukraine says Starshield terminals were restricted overnight with no warning, disrupting drone missions. Zelensky claims betrayal; Musk says the US military and the president control the service.
An overnight restriction, no warning
Ukrainian officials say SpaceX restricted part of its satellite service in Ukraine overnight on October 13 to 14, and that Kyiv's forces got no warning before it happened.
According to presidential adviser Serhiy Beskrestnov, the military-grade service, Starshield, was capped for terminals moving faster than about 100 miles per hour. Static terminals used for front-line communications kept working.
The timing was brutal. Zelensky said Russia launched 124 drones overnight and another 145 during the day, in what he called one of the largest attacks of the war. A ballistic strike on a Kyiv power plant reportedly left around 600,000 people without power.
Missions disrupted, blame assigned
Ukraine's 7th Rapid Reaction Corps said its drones lost connection for 10 to 20 seconds at speeds of 110 to 120 kilometers per hour, below the stated cap, making them harder to control. Some units said they were forced to cancel missions.
Beskrestnov said the move could not be a coincidence and linked it to the current political situation, though he offered no evidence. Zelensky went further, saying he had been betrayed by Trump and claiming the two men deliberately blocked the service while people were killed. He also said Kyiv received no early warning from partners before the Kyiv strike.
The friction comes after the Trump administration warned Ukraine it could suspend intelligence sharing if Kyiv keeps hitting Russian energy facilities. Trump, for his part, said the US is still sharing intelligence and is working to end the war.
Musk's response
Musk answered the accusations directly. He said Starshield is controlled by the US government and military, and ultimately by the president, while Starlink is a commercial product and is not built for offensive military use.
That distinction matters for how the story develops. SpaceX did not confirm who ordered the restriction or why, and the Pentagon contracts Starshield through the Space Force.

Options market and stocks to watch
SpaceX is private, so the trade runs through the satellite and defense complex. ASTS and RKLB are the high-beta satellite names that catch flow whenever Starlink's role in the war is in the headlines.
IRDM is the incumbent satellite communications name to watch for sympathy moves.
On the defense side, LMT and the broader primes tend to see call interest when US support for Ukraine looks uncertain and European defense spending expectations rise. Watch for elevated call volume in the satellite names if restrictions on Ukraine's connectivity become a longer policy fight, and follow the tape on the Unusual Whales news feed.
