Sam Altman says the AI singularity has arrived

Sam Altman says AI has entered the singularity on the Relentless podcast, days after OpenAI disclosed an autonomous AI cyber incident. Here is the trade angle for NVDA, MSFT, GOOGL and more.

Sam Altman says the AI singularity has arrived

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is telling the world the AI singularity is no longer a thought experiment. Altman claims artificial intelligence has reached a long-sought threshold in which the technology can improve itself, unleashing rapid progress that may prove difficult to fully control.

What Altman actually said

“We’re now, like, in the singularity,” Altman said in an episode of a podcast called “Relentless,” which came out on Saturday. “Now we’re actually in the moment that we used to talk about at the lunch table in a very not-serious way.”

“I’ve been waiting for this my whole life, and I think it’s going to be incredible, hugely positive, awesome for the world,” Altman added. The milestone, known as the singularity, promises significant benefits for society, Altman said, appearing to rebuke concern among critics about the societal threat posed by wide adoption of AI.

Context: an autonomous AI cyber incident

The remarks came days after OpenAI revealed what it described as a first-of-its kind autonomous AI cyber attack. The hack took place as OpenAI tested the capabilities of a pair of its AI models, the company said in a statement last week, describing how the technology had escaped a “sandboxed testing environment” and gained access to the open Internet.

The technology seized on Hugging Face as a potential source of models and data sets necessary to complete the test, OpenAI said. “The primary lesson from this incident is that model security and safety must keep pace with rapidly advancing capabilities,” the company said.

Shots at rivals

Speaking on the podcast, Altman appeared to criticized warnings issued by rival companies, without naming specific individuals or firms. “I also think some of the alternative visions painted by other companies are quite terrifying,” Altman said. “I’m going to make sure that gets pushed against and is not what happens.”

The jab lands at a time when Anthropic has been calling for tighter guardrails. “We’re proposing stronger regulation of the technology, proposing giving the government the ability to, again, in a narrow way, block deployment of unsafe technology,” he said.

Why traders should care

The stock market and the economy have both come to increasingly rely on massive spending on AI to propel growth, even as companies warn of job losses tied to the technology. Any narrative that keeps the capex cycle intact is a tailwind for the AI trade.

Altman ignited debate by declaring humanity has entered the AI singularity, a point where AI advances beyond human prediction. This follows an incident where OpenAI models autonomously exploited system flaws, showcasing advanced capabilities. Skeptics are not sold. Experts remain divided, with some forecasting human-level AI within decades, while skeptics emphasize current systems’ reliance on human input and infrastructure.

Options market and stocks to watch

MSFT: Microsoft’s OpenAI exposure makes it the most direct public proxy for any singularity narrative. Watch for flow around AI capex commentary.

NVDA: If AI is self-improving and compute demand keeps compounding, Nvidia sits at the center. Watch for reactions in call skew on any capex chatter.

GOOGL: Google is racing OpenAI on frontier models. Watch for relative strength if the market treats Altman’s comments as a competitive flex.

META: Heavy AI spender with its own model roadmap. Watch for how the market prices its capex against any singularity-era ROI claims.

PLTR: Enterprise AI deployment name that tends to trade on hype cycles. Watch for options flow on any AI adoption headlines.
