Cloudflare's Prince: bots now outnumber humans online
Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince says bots now generate more web traffic than humans, roughly 57.5% to 42.5%, arriving 18 months earlier than he forecast. Here is what it means for NET, ad-driven names, and CDN peers.
Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince says the internet just hit a milestone that arrived far earlier than anyone in the industry expected: bots are now generating more web traffic than humans. Cloudflare’s own Radar data pegs the split at roughly 57.5% bots versus 42.5% humans on HTTP requests.
What Prince actually said
Prince posted on X that the shift happened faster than he predicted, noting he had previously thought the crossover would come at the end of 2027, then early 2027, but agentic traffic is growing so fast that bots have now passed human traffic online for the first time in the internet’s history.
The milestone arrived roughly 18 months ahead of his prior forecast, driven by the surge in agentic AI agents. Prince also noted that the exact crossover date isn’t clean because the data is a bit messy, but said we are clearly on the other side now.
Why the numbers moved so fast
The driving force is not traditional web scrapers or search engine crawlers, but agentic AI, autonomous agents that perform tasks on behalf of users. A single AI agent shopping for a camera may visit thousands of websites, whereas a human user might visit only a handful. That asymmetry in request volume has created a fundamental change in how the internet functions.
Cloudflare’s 2026 Threat Intelligence Report also found that bots now account for 94% of all login attempts across its network, meaning only 6% of login attempts come from actual humans.

The catch: humans still win on engagement
Cloudflare metrics measure HTTP requests, not engagement. Humans remain the primary users of the web in terms of total time spent in app usage, streaming, and infinite-scrolling feeds. These mediums simply don’t generate the same volume of rapid-fire page-load requests as automated agents do.
Translation for the market: bots dominate the plumbing, but human eyeballs still drive ad monetization, for now.
The ad model problem
Prince said the rise in bot traffic raises questions about how the internet’s business model will operate in the future, because bots don’t click on ads. That is the crux of the trade thesis here, the current web is monetized on human attention.
Prince noted that one way to reconstruct the internet business model may be charging bots for access to digital users’ content, which could make the web free for humans again. Cloudflare is already positioning around that idea with its Pay Per Crawl product.
Options market and stocks to watch
Watch NET as the most direct beneficiary; Cloudflare sits at the choke point for bot detection, Pay Per Crawl monetization, and agentic traffic infrastructure.
Watch GOOGL and META for any signs that agentic browsing erodes traditional ad impressions and click-through economics.
Watch AMZN as agent-driven shopping reshapes conversion funnels, and FSLY and AKAM as CDN and edge peers exposed to the same traffic mix shift. See more market news here.
