McConnell Releases New Photo, Says He's Not Yet Ready to Return to Senate

Senate Republican Mitch McConnell is still sidelined. His office released a fresh photo and health update on Monday, saying the 84-year-old Kentucky senator has not yet been cleared to leave rehab and return to Washington.

The update

McConnell said he is still working to get back to his full schedule, keeping up with intense physical therapy per his doctors’ orders. He confirmed he will miss this weekend’s Fancy Farm Picnic in western Kentucky.

The Office of the Attending Physician said McConnell continues to recover from a June fall at home and is not yet medically cleared to leave the rehab facility. Physicians reportedly visit him daily to discuss his care.

How long he has been out

McConnell has been hospitalized or in rehab since mid-June after falling at his home. He has missed the last 38 votes on the Senate floor, and the chamber is scheduled to be in session for the next two weeks before summer recess.

His office did not offer a timeline for a return. With August recess ahead, an in-person return before Labor Day looks unlikely.
