Trump Says France Should Close Its Borders Amid Violent Unrest, Declaring 'France Is Burning'
'Close your borders and take control'
President Trump has said that France should close its borders amid violent unrest, declaring that "France is burning" and blaming immigration for the protests. In a Sunday post on Truth Social, Trump wrote that the immigration of "people from an entirely different world, people with hatred in their hearts, has shattered that once great country," and urged: "Close your Borders and take control, before it is too late!"
Protests that began over prices, not borders
The post landed the morning after the most destructive day yet of a protest movement roughly a month old. French authorities reported around 1,800 arrests nationwide after a Saturday of demonstrations that escalated into arson, looting and attacks on public buildings across Paris, Marseille, Lyon, Lille and other cities; more than 500 police and security personnel were reported injured, a demonstrator died after suffering a cardiac arrest, and some 1,500 shops were damaged, with Limoges city hall hit by fire.
The movement itself began over the cost of living, school conditions and deteriorating public services, with calls to revive the Yellow Vests movement that emerged in 2018. French officials have attributed the demonstrations primarily to economic and social grievances and have not established immigration as the cause of the violence. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu directed prefects to introduce limited local curfews and defended the police response, while Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez tendered his resignation Sunday before President Emmanuel Macron asked him to stay on given the need for continued command of law enforcement.

French unrest is a European risk story first: the euro in FXE and French exposure through EWQ price the politics, while luxury names with heavy Paris retail footprints wear the looting headlines directly. Trump's intervention also feeds the US immigration debate three weeks before the midterms, which keeps border and enforcement names in the conversation.
