UK Army Chief Says Political Leaders Will Start a 'Frank Conversation' With the Public About Preparing for War
'Our nation is going to need you'
The head of the army says the UK's political leaders are about to start a "frank conversation" with the public about the need to prepare for war, per Sky News.
General Sir Roly Walker, the chief of the general staff, said every citizen will be asked to make sacrifices and to play their part in the defence of the nation. He delivered the remarks bluntly to around 700 soldiers during a visit to Catterick Garrison in North Yorkshire, in comments captured on camera by the British Forces Broadcasting Service.
"You didn't know this, but our nation is going to need you," Walker told the troops, describing a "very dangerous time" in which the business of soldiering is returning to the nation's consciousness.
General Sir Roly Walker says UK political leaders will very soon start a "frank conversation" with citizens about the risks the country faces, and that citizens will have to consent to sacrifices to prioritise defence and security.
Sacrifice, consent, and a public that is not sure
Walker said leaders would explain where the risk lies and ask citizens to consent to sacrifices so defence and security can be prioritised, and ultimately to back soldiers to "take the fight to the enemy," per Sky News reporting of the address.
The message lands in a country that has not yet had that conversation with itself. A recent Ipsos poll cited alongside the coverage found 51% of British adults support increased defence spending, but 48% said there were no circumstances in which they would personally take up arms for Britain, while 36% said there were circumstances in which they would.
The pledge of a national conversation on defence was inherited from the previous prime minister more than 18 months ago and has yet to fully materialise. Walker framed threats from Russia and Iran as the backdrop, and other service chiefs have argued that crisis preparedness will require civil society and emergency services, not just the military, to be part of defending the country.

Options market and stocks to watch
A public conversation about sacrifice is, in market terms, a defence-spending conversation. Sustained European rearmament flows through the US primes: LMT, RTX, GD and NOC all sell into allied budgets that are still being revised higher, and the ITA aerospace and defence ETF captures the group.
The fiscal side matters too: higher UK defence outlays mean more gilt issuance, which prices through sterling and UK rate expectations. Watch for a formal government announcement of the national conversation and any defence-spending timetable, and follow the headlines on the Unusual Whales news feed.
