A Breakthrough Deal Between the US and Iran Could Be Announced as Soon as This Week

Mediators say a breakthrough is close

A breakthrough deal between the U.S. and Iran could be announced as soon as this week, sources familiar with mediation efforts told Al-Araby Al-Jadeed. It follows Iran's president saying Friday that Tehran isn't seeking nuclear weapons and is ready for dialogue. Qatar and Pakistan are continuing their diplomatic efforts to prevent a renewed war between Washington and Tehran, and the sources said negotiations were narrowing differences and encouraging mutual concessions.

A breakthrough deal between the US and Iran could be announced as soon as this week, sources familiar with the mediation efforts told Al-Araby Al-Jadeed.

The reported shape of the deal, and the warnings around it

Reported elements of the emerging agreement include reopening maritime access through the Strait of Hormuz, a phased unfreezing of Iranian assets held abroad, dilution of Iran's stockpile of uranium enriched to 60 percent under UN supervision, and a 60-day extension of the current ceasefire while details are worked out. Iran's foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said Monday that the two sides had reached understandings on many issues, while warning that a final deal is not imminent and accusing Washington of shifting its positions.

The diplomacy is running alongside open threats. Secretary Pete Hegseth warned Saturday that Iran would face "destruction" unless it abandoned its nuclear ambitions at the negotiating table, while Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of trying to drag the United States into another war. The sources cited by Al-Araby Al-Jadeed ruled out an immediate escalation despite the exchanges.

Options market and stocks to watch

A signed US-Iran deal is first an oil story: reopening the Strait of Hormuz unwinds the risk premium in crude, which runs through XLE and refiners, while defense names price the reduced chance of renewed strikes and GLD tracks the safe-haven bid either way. A breakdown in talks reverses all three trades at once.
